A breakout star on the WTA tour and current World No. 26, Amanda Anisimova is set to bring her big game and a poise that far exceeds her years to the Aviators as she joins the team for a two-night homestand on July 25 and 26.
Anisimova is no stranger to San Diego. In 2016, she competed in the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 18s National Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center, where she reached the singles semifinals.
On the pro circuit, her climb up the WTA rankings has been nearly vertical. She began 2018 on a tear, reaching the round of 16 at Indian Wells. After a foot fracture in March 2018 iced her momentum briefly, she returned to the tour the following July. Since beginning this year at an already impressive No. 87, Anisimova has thrilled fans with a semifinal finish at the French Open and her first WTA title in Bogota this past April, where she beat out Aviators teammate Astra Sharma.
“I’m really excited about playing World TeamTennis for the San Diego Aviators this July,” says Anisimova. “I’m sure it will be a great experience and I look forward to being a part of the team.”
Already having gone toe-to-toe against some of the biggest hitters on the tour and besting top players including Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep, and Aryna Sabalenka, Anisimova will deliver that same intensity to the WTT court in her debut with the Aviators. At 5’11”, her tremendous court coverage and speed will make her a valuable weapon in Coach John Lloyd’s arsenal as the 2016 league champion Aviators seek to recapture the WTT title and coveted King Trophy. She will be in San Diego’s line-up on Thursday, July 25 against the New York Empire and on Friday, July 26 versus the Aviators’ Southern California rival, the Orange County Breakers.
