American Ryan Harrison, who has been ranked as high as No. 43 in the world, will join the San Diego Aviators for the upcoming Mylan World TeamTennis season, team officials announced today. Harrison will replace Daniel Evans on San Diego’s team roster.
The 24-year-old Harrison, a resident of Austin, Texas, reached the fourth-round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., in 2012 and 2011. A professional since 2007, he achieved his career-high singles ranking of No. 43 in the world in July, 2012 after reaching the semifinals on grass in Newport, R.I.
Harrison, who is right-handed with a two-handed backhand, played for the United States in Davis Cup ties versus Switzerland and France in 2012. While playing on the Challenger circuit, he has won three singles titles, along with five doubles championships.
“With his extensive experience in singles and doubles on the USTA Pro Circuit and ATP World Tour, Ryan Harrison is a great addition to our team,” said Aviators’ General Manager and Assistant Coach Jim Ault. “His style of play is perfectly suited for World TeamTennis. As a former U.S. Davis Cup player, he should do very well with the team atmosphere in TeamTennis.”
The Aviators and Harrison, who will be making his WTT debut, will take on the Orange County Breakers in their home opener on Sunday, July 31 at 7 p.m. (PDT) at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
The Aviators 2016 WTT campaign will include four matches against the Breakers, their Southern California rivals, who are based in Newport Beach, Calif. The five-time defending WTT champion Washington Kastles will also make their first-ever visit to San Diego County.
The Aviators home schedule will be as follows:
Sunday, July 31 — Aviators vs. Orange County Breakers
Tuesday, Aug. 2 — Aviators vs. Orange County Breakers
Friday, Aug. 5 — Aviators vs. New York Empire
Saturday, Aug. 6 — Aviators vs. Washington Kastles
Sunday, Aug. 7 — Aviators vs. Springfield Lazers
Monday, Aug. 8 — Aviators vs. Philadelphia Freedom
The Aviators are led by Head Coach John Lloyd. In addition to Harrison, the team will feature Americans James Blake and Shelby Rogers, along with Raven Klaasen of South Africa and Darija Jurak of Croatia.
Blake, a former United States Davis Cup star, was ranked as high as No. 4 in the world during his 15-year career on the ATP World Tour. Klaasen, a doubles specialist who has won 10-career doubles titles on the ATP World Tour, achieved a career-high doubles ranking of No. 9 in the world earlier this month after reaching the doubles semifinals at Wimbledon.
Rogers is at a career-high No. 59 in the WTA singles ranking following her spectacular run to the French Open quarterfinals at Roland Garros earlier this year. Jurak has won three career WTA doubles championships, including this year’s doubles titles at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in the United Arab Emirates and Aegon International in Eastbourne, England.
The 41st season of Mylan World TeamTennis will run July 31 through Aug. 13, 2016. The top two teams will advance to the Mylan WTT Finals presented by Citi at 4 p.m. (EDT) on Friday, Aug. 26, at The West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, N.Y.
In addition to the Aviators and their Southern California rival Orange County Breakers, franchises for the 2016 season include five-time defending champion Washington Kastles in Washington, DC; the Philadelphia Freedoms owned by league co-founder Billie Jean King; the Missouri-based Springfield Lasers and the New York Empire in Queens, N.Y.
